The Health Care Bill vs The Grocery Bill

I hear all this talk about the the health care crisis; that the country needs a health care reform. The brains of our government are putting their eggs in the wrong basket. Health care starts in the grocery store.

We are not in crisis because people don't have affordable medical benefits. We are in crisis because people can't afford healthy, organic, sustainable food. I'm talking about real food, like apples, broccoli and carrots, not boxed macaroni and cheese, cup-0-noodles and the like.

What the country needs is a radical change from what has become the standard American diet. Sickness and disease is preventable with a diet rich in nutrients. We need to care for our bodies before they get sick. That is the only thing that is going to save our health. That is health care!

Summer Cleanse Workshop - Thursday, June 18 at 7 p.m.

Out with the old...

A couple of weeks ago, in a moment of courage, I decided to commit myself to a healthy seasonal cleanse for seven days. I can tell you the experience was liberating. I feel energized, and I want to share it with you... because it works.

Did you know that the primary cause of disease is inflammation due to wastes that are not properly eliminated from the body? Do you know that your body needs a rest from filtering toxins to keep you in good health? When we abuse our bodies by eating too much or eating the wrong things, we build up harmful wastes that create toxins in the body. We also have toxins all around us in the environment; chemicals, pesticides, food additives, allergens, bacteria, germs, parasites, heavy metals, viruses and air pollution. The question is no longer are you carrying toxins, but how much and what symptoms are you experiencing.

This is not meant to scare you, but to stress the importance of giving your internal systems a break; to clean your filters so your body can rejuvenate. Cleansing releases harmful impurities that can slow down your metabolism. For those who experience allergies, a cleanse is the perfect way to reduce or eliminate your symptoms.

So, are you ready for your detox?

You are invited to a Summer Cleanse Work Shop: an easy detox program that's practical, effective, food-based and does not require juicing, fasting, or taking lots of supplements.

When: Thursday, June 18, 2009, 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

Where: 32 Williams Avenue, Holtsville, NY 11742

Investment in your health: $50.

To Register: 631-626-1263

You will receive a detailed cleanse program designed specifically for you and a 25-page workbook with all the recipes and resources needed to successfully follow a cleanse. You will discover the benefits of cleansing:

Improve your immune system
Weight loss
Reduce unhealthy cravings
Improve seasonal allergies
Improve digestion
Increase energy and mental focus
Beautify the skin
Balance your hormones
Slow the effects of aging

I look forward to seeing you at the workshop. Bring a friend.

Be well,

Jann

Sprouts - Not Just Garnish

Sprouts are the most nutritious land-based foods and they are so easy to grow yourself.

I purchased a simple multi-tiered seed sprouting kit at Home Depot. Once a week I sprinkle some seeds in each of the tiers, rinse twice a day with filtered water and within a few days, I have sprouts ...ready to eat. They add a delicious texture to any salad or can be enjoyed on their own. Broccoli sprouts are my current favorite.

Sprouts, by their very nature, are still alive when we eat them so you also derive the benefits of nourishing the body with life energy.

Drink Your Vegetables

Juicing is a fast way to fortify your body with the nutrients it needs for optimum health.

Buy a juicer and start juicing.

Spring Cleaning

Do you ever read the ingredients on shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste? Ever wonder why there is a warning to call Poison Control if ingested on products that are applied to your skin? Think about medicinal patches and how they work. The skin is the largest organ. The medical chemical is absorbed through the skin into the blood stream. The same thing is happening with our cleansers.

It’s time for a spring cleaning to de-toxify, de-clutter and simplify. I’ll help you identify the preservative chemicals you want to avoid.

Parabens (butyl, methyl, propyl) - chemical preservatives used to extend shelf life. Studies suggest that parabens act like estrogen in the body. Excess estrogen is linked to breast cancer and hormone disruptions.

Propylene glycol is a thick clear alcohol that helps skin soak moisture, thins out liquids and enhances skin’s absorption of other ingredients in the product. It may also interfere with reproductive health. Because it is an absorption agent, it also helps other toxins get into your body through your skin.

Petrolatum is a petroleum jelly. It helps the skin retain moisture and gives products a shiny texture. Because it helps the skin retain moisture it also acts as a barrier and prevents the skin (the largest organ) from breathing properly and interferes with the skin’s excretory function (sweating).

Imidazolidinyl urea is the second most commonly used preservative after parabens. It also extends the product’s shelf life. When used with water, it releases formaldehyde and causes stress to your immune system.

Polyethylene glycol and polyethylene are derived from petrolatum. These chemicals help products thicken and gel. PEGs can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a carcinogen created during the manufacturing process and can cause hives, eczema and kidney toxicity.

Phenoxyethanol is an oily liquid preservative made from phenol, a coal tar derivative used to prevent scents from evaporating. Research has linked this chemical to endocrine interruption and cancers. It is the cause of eye and skin irritation.

Disodium laureth sulfosuccinate (DLS) is a chemical salt that lowers the water’s surface tension which produces foaming action and allows the product to spread. The problem is that is can produce harmful byproducts such as 1,4 dioxane and ethylene oxide two chemical linked to cancer.

Triethanolamine (TEA) is a chemical compound derivative of ammonia that boosts foaming action and prevents separation. Research has linked TEA to cancer.

It takes a little time and effort to identify new healthier products, but once you do, it actually simplifies things for you.

Getting Started

For most of us that is the hardest hurdle. Fad diets and New Year’s resolutions don’t work because they focus on one thing - - losing weight. Health and wellness is more than a number on a scale or the size of your pants.

Here’s how to jump start your health and wellness lifestyle:

Action Plan

Decide to be healthy
Identify your personal health concerns
Write down your health goals
Add in whole foods (vegetables, fruits whole grains)
Start eliminating processed foods (high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, sugar, caffeine)
Move (do what you love – dance, run, bike, swim, yoga)
Find your spiritual center (God, meditation, yoga, prayer)
